Bosnia and Herzegovina’s anthem started as a joke - and ended up on the World Cup stage

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national team faced the United States in the Round of 16 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, carrying with them the anthem 'Take Me to America' - a song that began as a fan banner and became a rallying cry. Vedran Mujagić, bassist of Dubioza Kolektiv, revealed how the 2011 track turned into a symbol of victory after BHFanaticos supporters unfurled a 20-meter banner with the lyrics before the playoff against Wales in Cardiff in November 2022.

How the joke became a national anthem

The moment came during the Wales playoff when the cameras panned to the stands. 'We had no idea what was happening. The anthems played, then the camera turned to the fans holding a massive banner that read: I am from Bosnia, take me to America' Mujagić said. What began as dark humor - a nod to the near-impossible task of beating Wales and then Italy - became reality when Bosnia defeated Wales and later Italy on penalties.

From anthem to anthem: the song’s double life

After the wins, the chant took on a life of its own. 'Fans first heard the football remix we recorded as a nod to the team and the tournament, but then they went back and listened to the original song about dashed American dreams' Mujagić explained. The original 2011 track mocked stereotypes of Bosnia and the Balkans, while the football version became a symbol of pride and progress.

What’s next for Bosnia and Herzegovina

The match against the USA marked a full-circle moment for the song. 'Take Me to America' is now part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s football history, and the team will push on toward a potential quarterfinal berth. The anthem continues to inspire fans worldwide as Bosnia writes its story on the biggest stage.
